Course Objectives

In this course, comparison between traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and Western medicine is made based on physiology. First of all, the Western physiology that is based on anatomy will be reviewed; meanwhile, the physiology of TCM that is focused more on the dynamical nature of meridian system will be discussed. The former is structure-oriented, and the latter more of function-oriented. Secondly, we will discuss and evaluate the concept of homeostasis in physiology. Thirdly, the theories of cell and gene will be examined. Fourthly, the physiology of TCM will be studied and it will be represented quantitatively under the chaotic wave theory of fractal continuum. To illustrate, the micturition of lower urinary tract of Wistar rats will be presented and discussed. As a result, the bladder function can be better appreciated.

  1. Study of the characteristics of physiology in Western medicine
  2. Study of the characteristics of physiology in TCM
  3. Review and comment on the concept of homeostasis
  4. On the cell and gene theories
  5. Physiology of TCM under  chaotic wave theory of fractal continuum
  6. Micturition of lower urinary tract under Western medicine
  7. Micturition of lower urinary tract under TCM interpretation
  8. Based on the comparison of 6 and 7, bladder function is discussed.
